That's the width of the Strait of Hormuz at its narrowest point — a slender neck of water connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. Through it flows 20 million barrels of oil every single day: roughly 20% of the world's entire petroleum supply, the lifeblood of global industry, heat, and transportation. And right now, it's mined.
Since early March 2026, Iran has been seeding the world's most important maritime chokepoint with naval mines, following U.S. and Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28. The U.S. Navy has responded by destroying 16 Iranian minelayer vessels.
